nbtsuite is composed of two programs:

  • nbtscan 2.6: scans a subnetwork, searching for machines with NetBIOS shared resources and logs what it founds. In the case of unpassworded shared resources, it also logs the contents of these resources. It also has heuristics to find .pwl files inside the shared resources and copy them for later cracking (using, for example: Cain).
  • hostscan: given a range of ip addresses, resolves the addresses to names. It can be used to create the subredes.ini file which is used by nbtscan.



History:

nbtscan first versions were written during 1998-1999 and they were very simple programs written in C (running in DOS) and several .bat files which called the C programs and filter the output of those programs. During the year 2000, I rewrote all the code as a command line windows application in Delphi (nbtscan) and hostscan (written in C) was latter added as an utility for nbtscan.
